By definition, a general store was supposed to meet the small, basic needs of most people. Of all the types of stores, Rory loved general stores the most. Most days, like today for example, she would walk into a general store and marvel at the sheer variety of things available for purchase. Variety was great; variety was beautiful. Choice was the foundation of freedom, and having many choices made Rory feel liberated and unrestrained. General stores bred spontaneity because everything was all there ready to be picked up at a whim. Rory could take an iced-tea or a packet of lubricated throat lozenges. She could. Could she've done that in a bookstore? Or a crafts store? She thought not. Currently, she was considering the lemon-mint throat lozenges. A lot of thought had to be put in when buying something - especially because she was a college bound Senior soon to be a broke college freshman. She had to get used to being fiscally responsible. So, to help her make the choice, she read the nutritional information on the back. Her sun-kissed skin got goosebumps - a paradoxical image, she thought. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she wished she hadn't worn only shorts, a t-shirt and flip flops.
